The reality of full-ride esports scholarships
Headlines about "full-ride esports scholarships" mostly date from 2016–2019, when a few early programs used big offers to recruit their first rosters. Today the picture is different:
- Full tuition
- 1 program publish it
- Full ride
- 0 with housing and meals
- $5,000+ a year
- 9 programs
- Typical award
- $2,500 median per year
Even Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, famous for full-tuition offers in 2018, no longer publishes them: its current page describes academic scholarships for players instead.
Colleges that publish full-tuition esports scholarships
- Northwest State Community College (Archbold, OH): NSCC Thunder Esports Scholarships: full-tuition (GPA of 2.75 to obtain) and half-tuition (GPA of 2.5 to obtain), for esports team members who go above and beyond in supporting esports events and operations; renew with 2.5 GPA (full) or 2.0 GPA (half) northweststate.edu, current page.
Some programs offer full tuition to a few top recruits without publishing it. If a coach mentions it, ask for the offer in writing, including what it covers and how it's renewed.

How players stack aid toward a full ride
- File the FAFSA. Federal Pell Grants and college need-based grants can add up to more than a typical esports award.
- Earn academic merit aid. Many colleges award merit scholarships automatically by GPA and test scores. Ask whether the esports award stacks with them or replaces them.
- Target low net prices. Compare programs by net price, not sticker price, and check in-state public options.
- Consider two years at a community college. Junior colleges with esports teams have a median net price of $8,416 a year, and some offer tuition scholarships, before you transfer.
- Get every offer in writing, with the amount per year, renewal rules and what happens if you leave the team.

What is the difference between a full ride and full tuition?
Full tuition covers tuition only. A full ride covers tuition plus housing, meals and usually fees and books. Esports scholarships that cover tuition in full are rare; full rides are rarer still.
