Can you get a scholarship for esports?
Yes. Esports scholarships are real, and more colleges offer them every year. They work much like scholarships for traditional sports: a college's esports program awards money toward tuition to players it wants on its roster. Here is what the 428 programs in our directory publish for 2026–27:
- Offer scholarships
- 102 of 428 programs (24%)
- Publish an amount
- 22 1 full tuition
- Typical award
- $2,500 median per year, where stated
- Range
- $250–$10,000 per year, plus full tuition
The catch: most programs don't publish what they pay. 80 say scholarships are available without naming an amount, and awards usually depend on your skill, your role on the roster and the program's budget. Treat published numbers as a ceiling, not a promise.
Which colleges give esports scholarships?
Almost all esports scholarships come from varsity programs, where the college runs or sponsors the team. 101 of 350 varsity programs offer one. Student-run club teams, common at big state universities, almost never do: 1 of 78. That's why many smaller private colleges and regional universities, not famous sports schools, lead on esports money.

What an esports scholarship covers
Nearly every esports scholarship is a partial tuition award, renewed each year as long as you stay on the team and keep your grades up. Real examples from program pages:
- Northwest State Community College: full tuition with a 2.75 GPA, or half tuition with a 2.5 GPA (current page).
- West Virginia Wesleyan College: $1,000 to $6,000 a year, stackable with other college scholarships and grants (2024-25).
- Messiah University: $1,000 to $5,000 a year for incoming first-year and transfer students, renewable (2026-27).
- Seminole State College: $500 per semester toward books and tuition, with a 2.0 GPA and 12 credit hours (2025-26).
- University of California, Irvine: partial scholarships of $3,000 or $6,000 a year (2026).
Things to ask before you commit:
- Is it per year or total? "$2,000 over two years" is $1,000 a year.
- Does it stack with academic merit aid and need-based grants, or replace them?
- How is it renewed? Look for a minimum GPA, credit load and roster requirement.
- What does it leave you paying? Compare the award with the college's net price. Our scholarship amounts guide shows how far typical awards go.
Who qualifies, and how you get one
Esports scholarships are earned the way roster spots are: by being good at a game the college fields, and being admissible. Programs commonly look at:
- Skill in a title they field. Your rank, tournament results and game sense in titles like VALORANT, Rocket League, League of Legends or Smash. Check which games each college plays.
- Tryouts or recruiting. Many programs hold tryouts each fall; others recruit high school players directly through recruiting forms or by contacting the coach.
- Academics. Admission to the college, plus a minimum GPA and full-time enrollment to keep the award.
- Teamwork and conduct. Coaches recruit people who communicate well, show up to practice and represent the school.
