Wakes Week’ Mobile Pop Up Exhibition Stand – Open Call

The British Textile Biennial and Showtown, Blackpool are looking for a creative to design and build a mobile pop up exhibition structure to house and tour a collection of photographs and postcards of Blackpool Wakes Week from 1900-1939. It is planned to take the pop up exhibition to family festivals, events and care homes across Lancashire.

Through touring the exhibition, British Textile Biennial will gather oral histories from the people who have lived and remembered experience of Wakes Weeks, to build into an online archive and exhibition to be hosted as part of the www.lancashiretextilegallery.com website.

We hope the exhibition design will respond to /reference the visual imagery of Victorian seaside and /or Lancashire Mills and evoke the vibrancy and excitement of Wakes Weeks.

Prerequisites:

  • Design should hold up to 100 prints ranging in size from postcard to A4 and some at larger scales.
  • Design should be playfully interactive, or have interactive elements.
    Design should be durable and sturdy: to cope with being installed and packed down several times a year.
  • Structure should ideally fit in a short wheel base van and be able to be set up by two people in no more than 1 hour.
  • Design must protect the display items from the elements.
  • Structure should work or be adaptable for both outdoor and indoor settings and on multiple surfaces such as Grass, tarmac, gravel and carpet.
  • The final structure should be compact, we envisage approximately 3x4m footprint maximum.
  • The structure should hold a minimum of five visitors at a time.
  • Set up instructions should be designed to accompany the structure.
  • The final structure should be complete, delivered and be ready to be installed at Burnley Canal Festival on Sunday the 25th of August 2024.
  • The designer must be available to lead the first install of the structure at Burnley Canal Festival on Sunday the 25th of August 2024

Budget:

The budget for this project is £5,000 which must cover fees, expenses, materials and delivery. At this point we only ask that you provide us with a simple budget including fees/daily rates/outline costs.

Delivery timescale:

Application deadline: Friday 7th June
Interviews: week commencing 17th June
Design sign off: Monday 22nd July
Build complete: Friday 16th August
First install: Burnley Canal Festival Sunday 25th August, 9-11am
Open to public – Burnley Canal Festival, Sunday 25th August
