The AFGRI Equipment Apprentice Program for South African Grade 12 Students

Are you a Grade 12 student with a passion for mechanics and agricultural machinery? The AFGRI Equipment Apprentice Program is now open for applications until June 6th! Join us for a dynamic 3-year in-service apprenticeship program.
Designed to cultivate skilled Tractor Mechanics or Earthmoving Equipment Mechanics.

As an apprentice, you will undergo comprehensive training, combining practical experience in our workplace with theoretical education through esteemed institutions such as the Technical College and John Deere Training Academy.

Program Details:

Training Structure: Throughout the program, apprentices will engage in a blend of practical on-the-job training and distant learning facilitated by a Technical College.

Certification: Successful completion of the program leads to a recognized qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic.

Curriculum: Training encompasses repair and maintenance techniques, stock management, customer service skills, and general operational tasks within our facility.

Duration: 3 years, commencing with a 6-month probation period to ensure mutual compatibility.

Minimum requirement for this application is:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Proficient communication and administrative skills.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Technical Mathematics (Not Literacy) (At least 40% / E-Symbol)
  • Physical Science (At least 40% / E-Symbol)
  • Technical Science (At least 40% / E-Symbol)
  • Engineering Graphics and Design (At least 40% / E-Symbol)
  • N2 qualification in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Diesel Trade Theory, and either Industrial Electronics, Engineering/Technical Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory.
    *Should the applicant not have the N2 qualification, the Matric Certificate will also be taken into consideration if the applicant has subjects such as: Mathematics (Not Literacy) (At least 40% / E-Symbol)

Duties of the Apprenticeship will include, but not limited to:

  • Trained to be a Tractor Mechanic / Technician or Earthmoving Technician.
  • Repair and maintenance of related equipment.
  • Responsible for stock control.
  • General work in the workplace.
  • Customer service.

Contractual Obligations:

  • Apprentices are expected to commit to a 3-year contract with AFGRI.
  • Withdrawal during the apprenticeship or work-back period may incur financial obligations based on the phase of withdrawal.
  • The work-back period entails compensating AFGRI for the time invested in training.
  • Failure to complete the program within four years terminates the apprenticeship without obligation for further employment.

Training Support:

  • All training costs are covered by the employer.
  • In the event of failure, apprentices are responsible for arranging and funding additional training.
  • Saturdays may be designated for training sessions, and distant learning modules may continue during work hours as required.

  • Complete the screening questionnaire and any additional assessments provided.
  • Shortlisted candidates will undergo interviews, including aptitude and technical tests.
  • Successful candidates will receive a formal offer to join the program.
