How to Link the University of Leicester Library to Google scholar – Google scholar provide two ways to make it easier to access the electronic and print resources in your library.
Library Links – Library links are article-level links to subscription full text for patrons affiliated with a library. This program works best for electronic resources, such as journal and conference articles.
Library Search –Library search offers links to book catalogs where the patron can check local availability of a book, or request a library loan. This program works best for print resources, such as textbooks and monographs.
When you search on Google Scholar, if you are on campus, Google Scholar should recognise this and automatically give you access to the full-text of journal articles if the university library has a subscription.
If you are off-campus, Google Scholar does not automatically recognise you as a member of the university. This can lead to you hitting ‘paywalls’ and being unable to access full-text journal articles. You can improve your experience by setting up Library Links in Google Scholar.
- Go to Google Scholar
- Click on ‘Menu’ (the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner)
- Click on ‘Settings.
- Click on ‘Library Links’
- Type ‘Leicester’ into the searchbar and perform the search
- Select the tickbox options relating to University of Leicester
- Click on ‘Save’
You can then continue to search Google Scholar as normal. In the results list, you will see an additional option to ViewIt@Leicester. Click this and you will be redirected back to Library Search, and given options to login with your university IT username and password to view any full-text item. Alternatively, if you have downloaded LibKey Nomad you may be able to access more content.
Google Scholar will also find results from journals and other resources that the university library does not have access to. If this occurs, you may be able to request a copy of the item using our Document Supply service.
