LUANAR PhD Graduate Teaching Assistantship 2024 Program – The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is inviting applications from suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated academic/research professionals to be considered for PhD Graduate Teaching Assistantship. The Graduate Teaching Assistants will be a part of academic and research teams at LUANAR and will be required to take part in teaching undergraduate courses in any of the following disciplines:


• Animal Health or Animal Physiology (1 Position)
• Horticulture or Biotechnology (1 Position)
• Agronomy (1 Position)
• Aquatic Ecology or Fisheries Management or Fishing Technology or Environmental Pollution and Ecotoxicology (1 Position)
• Food Chemistry (1 Position)
• Veterinary Surgery (1 Position)
• Veterinary Pathology (1 Position)
• Language and Communication (1 Position.)
• Gender and Development (1 Position)
• Forest Science or Forest Genetics (1 Position)
• Group Dynamics and Community Engagement (1 Position)
• Finance and Accounting (1 Position)
• Nutrition for Health (1 Position)


• Biology (1 Position)
• Language and Communication (1 Position)
• Livestock Production (1 Position)
• Nutrition for Health (1 Position)


Graduate Teaching Assistants are expected to be pursuing their Phd studies at the University, while providing 10 hours per week of service as follows:

• To deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities, including tutorials, seminars
and lectures.
• To contribute to the development of appropriate teaching materials to ensure content
and methods of delivery meet learning objectives.
• To participate in the assessment process, using a variety of methods and techniques and
provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
• To participate in the supervision of practical work, advising on skills, methods and
techniques to assist the transfer of knowledge.
• To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that
supports a research led and scholarly approach to student learning.
• To engage in professional development as appropriate and regularly update subject
related knowledge base.
• To undertake limited administrative duties as requested by the Head of Department.
• To be familiar with subject-based pedagogy.
• To engage in professional development to remain current and ensure application of
recent advances in knowledge to teaching.


• Bachelor’s degree with Credit or distinction.
• Master’s degree in subject or related area.
• Current LUANAR doctoral student OR should apply for admission to a LUANAR Doctoral
program at www.luanar.ac.mw.
• Teaching experience at undergraduate level and research experience in related subject
are an added advantage.


• Good communication skills, both orally and written.
• Good interpersonal skills and presentation skills.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work with little supervision.
• Motivated.
• Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.


LUANAR will provide the following to the Graduate Teaching Assistants:
• Tuition and administrative fees waiver.
• Opportunity to apply for research grants within the university and externally.

• The assistantship is for a period of one year with possibility of renewal subject to
performance and academic progress in the PhD program.
• The assistantship can be renewed a maximum of 3 times.

NOTE: A Graduate Assistantship is not a scholarship, and its provision is limited to what
is specified in the compensation package. It does not cover medical, supervision and any
other costs that are to be incurred by the Assistant(s).
